anniversary

on december sixth four years ago i played my first show as “ema and the ghosts” at mr. t’s bowl in highland park. i played all the songs i knew and half of them were covers. one of my ukulele strings would not stay in tune so i was down from four to three. the place was so quiet everyone could probably hear my internal mantra of, “what am i doing, never again…” or maybe they were just listening to me sing. and there was this weird kid who asked if he could sit next to me after my set. i couldn’t tell how old he was or what he wanted from me but i could see that he was special. and it was like suddenly growing another limb. very odd. i just knew he was there, that he was mine, and that he probably wouldn’t be going anywhere for a while.

pehrspace for being my favorite club and within walking distance from my house…pauline for booking us…daniel for guarding the door like a lion…mary and eli for valorously heart hanging, pie baking, and rocking out as two different bands on the same night…ivan for being adorable and playing with balloons…arlena for putting the peppermint in the lemonade and shaking it all up like a freaking pro…alissa for fearlessly watching over all the cupcakes and all the children…black nile for letting me sing with them and being dangerously bad ass…nicole kidman for being as awesome as only someone who probably really doesn’t know how awesome he is can be…sara and lili for being the bestest, sweetest, nicest djs in the universe…jon carling for drawing a sick poster…la-underground for mystery and promotion…jesse knight for not letting me fall off the ladder and die the night before my 21st birthday…EVERYONE who came to the show and had fun…you did have fun, right? i really hope you did!
